“Is this the real life
Is this just fantasy
Caught in a landslide
No escape from reality
Open your eyes
Look up to the skies and see
Im just a poor boy, I need no sympathy
Because Im easy come, easy go,
A little high, little low,
Anyway the wind blows, doesnt really matter to me…”

-Queen

Read this in a forward. As simple and conventional as it sounds, it carries a lot of depth:

“The happiest people in this world are not those who have no problems, but those who learn to live with things that are less than perfect.”

True, ain’t it?

Before you proceed reading, this post might plant seeds in your mind about my opinion of the movie. So, if you don’t want to read about it, don’t. :)

Watched Rock On last week. Directed by Abhishek Kapoor, the movie introduces Farhan Akhtar and Prachi Desai as actors. The movie revolves around the story of a music band called Magik. With Farhan as the lead singer, Arjun Rampal on the guitar, Purab-the drummer and Luke on the keyboard, the entire feel of a ‘music band’ comes alive. The direction is quite fantastic. The movie dwindles between the present and shots from the past. The present, of course shows the band dissolved, and all these guys living their individual lives, separately and away from each other. For whatever reasons, the band got dissolved 10 years ago. Prachi, Farhan’s gorgeous wife finds out about this part of his life and tries to reintroduce him to the happiness he once shared with his band and music.

The story is more on the lines of a reunion of this band. Fantastic direction, flawless editing, great cinematography, superbly-natural dialogue delivery, fine & classy hair and costume styling, simple concept with a different appeal. The music on the other hand, is a milestone in Indian cinema. Farhan Akhtar is creatively very active and his voice has a very, very different feel. He is not only a good singer, but looks like an extremely natural performer as well. He is a good actor who can do better with more films.

Prachi, who plays a very important role in the movie has delivered a promising performance and I think, is here to stay. She is attractive, and smooth. Debbie, not sure what her name is,  is Arjun Rampal’s wife in the movie. She potrays her character very well and looks like a trained actor. Her dialogue delivery, screen presence and confidence is quite charming and appeals well to the audience. Luke Kenny, someone I know only as a VJ, has done a tremendous job with his role. Very natural, smooth dialogue delivery. Though you can see faint efforts in his emotions, I think he has done justice to his character. Liked him a lot. Poorab, or KD in the movie, is his usualy self. Charming, passionate, has his own style and has played the drums like his own. He looks very comfortable with the equipment and has soaked his role very nicely. Even as a simpleton son of a rich Daddy, he played his part well.

I think the movie is something everyone can relate to. We all have passions we either follow, or suppress. But we do have something that can really get us going. In this case, they have taken Music as a passion. It could be Football for some, books for others and theatre for certain others. The point in the movie is not to follow music, the point is not to let your passions die. Life is too short to be wasted on living it mechanically. Life is too short to live ordinarily by just about meeting the basic necessities of survival. Quench the thirst of your soul which is hungry for good things. Good things that come from simple forms of art. Good things that root from simple emotions of love and passion. Good things that are as innocent as creating a music piece, or painting a thought. Good things of loving people around you. Good things that come to you from friends who matter.

I strongly recommend watching the movie. It is worth every penny, every minute of it. It’s different that I love Rock music and might have a tiny bias towards it, but overall, the movie is an experience of its own kind and definately leaves you with several questions answers to which lie very much within you.

So, when was the last time you followed your passion?

Rock On!
